Derived from the Latin word "mandatum," meaning "mandate" or "commandment," Maundy Thursday commemorates Jesus' ministry during the Last Supper in the Upper Room and after as He departed with his disciples to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. On this day, Jesus observed the Passover, establishing the Christian ordinance of the Lord's Supper (or Communion), symbolizing His body given and blood shed for His people's salvation as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, and washing His disciples' feet. Setting this example, Jesus commanded His disciples to do likewise (cf. John 1:29-32; 13:1-7).
